Biking on Hilton Head

Today’s “post from the beach” is coming late because we’ve been busy packing a full day into our last day. Among the many fun things we’ve done, we made sure to take one last bike ride after dinner this evening.

We were told that Hilton Head ranks in some top ten list for US biking communities, and it’s easy for us to see why. Everywhere you look there are tree lined bike trails.

20110603-102349.jpgOn Wednesday, we rented two “cruising bikes” for the remainder of the week. We attached Ella’s Kid Kart to mine, and we’ve taken a bike ride every day since. Last night we biked to dinner at Carraba’s Italian Restaurant, and tonight we took our longest ride of the week as we went over to a secluded golf resort.

The ease of hoping onto our bikes for a ride has fit in perfectly with the pacing of our vacation. Beth and I both agree that Hilton Head is our kind of place. Its quiet beaches, miles of bike trails and family atmosphere have made a great week long home for our little family. We leave tomorrow with sweet memories which will last a lifetime.

A January Bike Ride? It’s True!

During the late afternoon hours, Beth, Ella and I took advantage of today’s unseasonably warm temperatures by taking a bike ride along Knoxville’s Third Creek Trail. Ella rode in her Kid Carriage behind my bike while Beth tagged along.

Midway through our trip we stopped at Tyson Park to let Ella climb on the play structure and slide down a couple of slides. Our only concern was how well Ella would do since we had only fifteen minutes to play before we had to return; however, we were both surprised at how she willingly came with us when it was time to go back.

Back at the parking lot, as I finished packing up our bikes, a train came by. I picked Ella up and hurried across to let her see. Whenever she hears a train at home, she always lets us know; however, before today, she’d never seen one. She made a rumbling noise as she watched it go past. We waved bye-bye as the last car went by.

Next Beth and I grabbed some frozen yogurt while we fed Ella dinner. Afterwards, we headed home remarking on what an extraordinary month it has been. We’ve had more snow days and snow on the ground than we’ve had in at least ten years, and today with temperatures in the mid-sixties, we took our first January bike ride ever. We both savored the thought that this was an especially early beginning to what we hope are many more fun rides in the coming Spring, Summer and Fall.

Ella’s First Bike Ride

Tonight, Beth and I were able to take Ella on a bike ride around the neighborhood. Ella got to use the Kid Kart trailer that Beth’s parents gave us for Christmas last year. It’s a little two wheeled cart that attaches to the back of my bike. Ella looks so cute sitting in it.

We don’t have any pictures, so you’ll just have to imagine her as we rode around the neighborhood. She pointed out many doors, said “Hi” to mommy twenty or thirty times, and she had a smile on her face the whole time. We’re all looking forward to many more biking excursions.
